Shanghai in 1928 was a hellscape where the neon lights of the foreign concessions mingled with blood on the docks. French Concession police threw their weight around, gangs carved up the city, and ordinary people scraped by in the cracks. The dockside feud between the Yixing Gang and the Lianxing Society pushed the chaos to a breaking point.
After the old gang leader died, the young Shen Yanzhi took over the Yixing Gang, which was on the verge of collapse. He had to fend off the relentless pressure of Lianxing Society boss Zhao Shanhe, soothe the gang elders who distrusted him, and guard against the shifting demands of Charles Luo, a detective captain in the French Concession. To provide for the gang's people and hold on to its last dock, he had no choice but to ask Su Manqing for grain and funds. She owed the old leader a favor and owned businesses including a foreign trading house and a silk shop. But he was unexpectedly drawn into a deeper whirlpool: Su Manqing wanted him to kill Zhao Shanhe at Charles Luo's birthday banquet. Zhao had swallowed up her businesses and murdered her men.
The banquet became a battleground for all the factions. Shen Yanzhi set a trap and lured Zhao Shanhe into the back courtyard, where he captured him, only to be surrounded by Charles Luo, who had seen it coming. At the critical moment, Lu Mang arrived with Yixing Gang brothers to reinforce them. In the ensuing chaos, they turned the tables on Charles Luo and ultimately managed to get the gang elders and children safely onto a ship bound for Tianjin. In this contest, there is no absolute right or wrong, only the struggle to survive and the resolve to honor one's promises. The undercurrents in Shanghai may have calmed for now, but the road ahead for Shen Yanzhi and his brothers is still full of unknown dangers.
