The story takes place in an aging apartment building called Jinjiang Garden, completely out of step with the modern city around it. Built in the late 1990s, the building has cheap rent because of its remote location and outdated facilities, attracting tenants who are either strapped for cash or hiding something. Yet everything about it, from its location and architectural layout to its interior design, happens to conform to an ancient and dangerous set of feng shui taboos, forming a vast “trapped beast's lair.” Rumor has it that those who move in suffer anything from bad luck and mental disorientation to accidents and bizarre deaths. For years, stories of hauntings, missing residents, and suicides have circulated, dismissed as nonsense or coincidence. It is not until Lin Wei, a folklore researcher, sets foot inside to investigate the strange circumstances of her friend Chen Xin's death that the terrifying truth behind the building begins to emerge. It is more than just a place with bad feng shui. It seems to be a living entity that continually devours the vitality of the living, and anyone who enters may become one of its “prisoners,” trapped inside with no chance of release.
