Set in Chaling, Hunan, The Thread of Autumn traces the century-long lives of Chen Renqiu and her descendants, unfolding a sweeping portrait of an era where women's education and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage are intertwined.
In the late Qing and early Republican periods, Chen Renqiu broke free from the constraints of traditional morality and transformed a women's needlework society into a girls' school. She raised funds through Hunan embroidery and enlightened the people through learning, planting the seeds of women's education by the Fushui River. Guided by the embroidery philosophy of “working with the flow,” she built a place of hope with both needle and book. Even amid warlord conflicts and raging battles, she led her students to continue their lessons in caves and hold fast to their principles in chaotic times.
As time passed, her commitment lived on in her descendants. Her daughter, Chen Nianqiu, applied the rigor of a historian to organize and preserve her forebears' educational ideals. Her granddaughter, Chen Zhixia, brought a modern perspective to tradition, incorporating Hunan embroidery stitches into digital design and carrying the spirit of “The Thread of Autumn” across borders. From orchids on an embroidery frame in the Republican era to shimmering water patterns on a contemporary fashion runway, from introductory lessons in an ancestral hall to forums of a global education alliance, what endures across generations is women's hunger for knowledge, their innovation in passing on tradition, and a resilient vitality that moves forward like the Fushui River.
The novel salvages details from the folds of history and reveals the spirit in the paths traced by needle and thread. It chronicles the rise and fall of a family over a century, while singing the praises of countless women who used resilience as their needle and the years as their thread to embroider an epic of their era.
