Synopsis
The moment the Red Crow Comet tore across the sky, Lan Yu plunged from the ruins of the modern world into the “New Martial Era.” He opened his eyes in a mass grave outside Luoyang City and ran into Agula, a mixed-blood barbarian being hunted by the Zhenwu Bureau. With wolf ears pricked up and a poisoned arrow lodged in his shoulder, Agula was an “outsider” just like him.
This is a world where inner breath reigns supreme. The iron hooves of the Great Jing Dynasty's Zhenwu Bureau trample the martial world, while the five great sects struggle between intrigue and chivalry. Foxfire from the Ten Thousand Demons Valley in the west and howls from the northern Hanhai grasslands are closing in on the border. Yet Lan Yu, a modern outsider who can't even control his breathing, uses his knowledge of chemistry to cure the Zhenwu Bureau's poison, applies the laws of physics to dismantle the Beggars' Sect's defenses, and even tries psychology to steady Su Wan's mind as she invokes the gods.
From a “mad scientist” who blunders into a chaotic mess to a special adviser trusted by the Beggars' Sect, Lan Yu gradually gathers a group of “outcasts” around him: a little beggar whose leg has yet to heal but whose heart is kind, an Emei healer framed by her own sect, and the wolf-eared youth who once regarded him with suspicion. They must stand against the Zhenwu Bureau's icy blades under Li Mo's command, the hypocritical Ice Palm of Kunlun Zi, and the court's scheme to “drive the tigers away by pitting them against the wolves.”
When the barbarian cavalry rides south, the demons' foxfire spreads east, and the balance between court and martial world collapses, Lan Yu finally understands that what he wants to build is not a faction, but a “Void Domain” that can welcome outsiders and break the rules. Here, the mixed-blood wolf-eared youth need not be hunted, the modern visitor who understands science need not be rejected, and even the power of faith behind invoking the gods can be redefined.
