The story takes place in the Lüliang Mountains of Shanxi during the War of Resistance Against Japan. Zhao Feiyun, a cultivator, descends from the mountains with his family heirloom, the Soul-Eating Blade, to fight the Japanese forces sweeping through the area, becoming their nightmare. But the blade requires his heart’s blood to unleash its power, and every enemy he kills costs him a portion of his cultivation. One day, while ambushing the Japanese at Langya Pass, Zhao Feiyun encounters a ghost warrior summoned by Japanese commander Matsui. At a critical moment, Du Wanqiu arrives with armed villagers and saves him. She tells him that the Japanese plan to sacrifice the villagers with Blood Soul Pills to practice an evil art. The two plan to use a secret passage to infiltrate the Japanese stronghold, only to discover that the passage is a trap. A yin-yang sorcerer also identifies Du Wanqiu as the person who lured Zhao Feiyun there. Though Zhao Feiyun has his doubts, he helps her break out. Later, while rescuing the villagers, Zhao Feiyun is imperiled when his heart’s blood runs dry, and Du Wanqiu transfers her inner energy to help him. As he recovers, Zhao Feiyun notices a scar on Du Wanqiu’s wrist that matches the Soul-Eating Blade. She reveals that she saved him three months ago and had only pretended to lure the enemy into a trap. But even as they celebrate, another Eastern yin-yang sorcerer bearing a bronze token watches from the shadows. To protect the woman he loves and the villagers, Zhao Feiyun must face more unknown dangers and challenges. He must choose between his feelings and his own safety, overcome the toll the Soul-Eating Blade takes on his cultivation, and join forces with Du Wanqiu to fight the Japanese and the sorcerers’ wicked schemes, or risk losing both the villagers’ trust and the woman he loves.
