In a remote mountain village in the 1980s, Jiaxin is pursued by Chen Dana, Yang Erleng, and Xiu Sanpao. Her childhood friend Wenli, who has fallen for Chen Dana, schemes against Jiaxin, but Xiu Sanpao sees through her plan and gives Jiaxin a discreet warning. When the scheme is exposed, Wenli leaves the village. Once Jiaxin comes to her senses, she focuses on her own life, and the four of them remain friends. Later, Yang Erleng dies while helping with disaster relief, and Xiu Sanpao passes away from a terminal illness. Chen Dana shoulders the burden of supporting both families, caring for Wenli, Xishang, whom Yang Erleng had saved, and the children of all three households. When Chen Dana falls gravely ill, his eldest, Wenbo, and second child, Lengwa, drop out of school to work the fields. Xishang quietly helps with the farm work and looks after the children’s studies. Once the family’s circumstances improve, the three children, Wenbo, Lengwa, and Niannao, return to school, help one another prepare for their exams, and eventually all get into university. Yang Erleng’s parents pass away in winter, and Xishang moves into the compound to live with everyone else. When the children leave to study far from home, Chen Dana, Jiaxin, Wenli, and Xishang see them off at the train station. Though time and hardship have left their mark, their gazes remain steadfast as they watch over the compound and cooperative, holding close their memories of those gone and their deep devotion to the life they share.
