When Mortals First Encountered the Apocalypse

When the clouds looming over the world suddenly descend, announcing that the "apocalypse" is no longer a fictional script, we, millions upon millions of ordinary people, finally understand what it means to face something for the first time.

The first time witnessing order collapse. The peace and rules we took for granted come crashing down, and the familiar world twists and crumbles before our eyes. The shock leaves us bewildered and helpless to our very bones, beyond anything any warning could prepare us for.

The first time struggling to survive. Clean water and safe food, things once within easy reach, suddenly become things we must exhaust ourselves, and sometimes risk our lives, to obtain. Every attempt is unfamiliar and fraught with anxiety.

The first time facing the depths and glimmers of human nature. Under the crushing weight of survival, we witness evil born of fear, and feel goodness flare up in desperate circumstances. This complex portrait of human nature is a first that no textbook ever depicted.

"Isn't this everyone's first time going through something like this?" Those words get to the heart of it. There are no rehearsals and no handy guidebooks. Faced with the apocalypse, every ordinary person is a newcomer stumbling forward. Admitting to the awkwardness and vulnerability of this being our "first time" is precisely where we begin to understand one another, gather strength, and search for a way to survive among the ruins. The first sight of the apocalypse leaves fear etched into us, yet it also gives rise to the most primal resilience and instinct to learn in the struggle to stay alive.
