The story follows Su Zhi, an ordinary woman with an extraordinary gift for seeing through every lie. Alongside Luo Ming, a physicist, Wang Xiaokui, a top-tier hacker, and Chen Jing, a forensic pathologist, she forms an investigative team under the “care” of veteran police officer Lei Tao. Together, they take on the city’s strangest and most baffling cold cases.
From a livestreamed locked-room mystery involving an influencer’s bizarre death to a perfectly dismembered body sorted according to garbage-sorting rules, they crack one bizarre case after another using their own astonishing methods. Yet a shadow seems to linger behind every case: that of a mysterious organization called “Dumpling Skin.” As if playing a grand game of chess, the organization keeps testing human weakness through its cases. The deeper the investigation goes, the more they discover that its reach extends into digital networks and old cases, and that it has begun targeting their team directly. Attacks on their teammates, exposed identities, and life-or-death trials follow one after another. In the end, they must confront “Dumpling Skin,” uncover the truth behind a wrongful conviction spanning twenty years, and stop an ultimate plot to overturn the social order.
This is a clash between reason and madness, and a legend about solving the toughest cases with the most irreverent attitude. When the dust settles, this “band of oddballs” has become the city’s last line of defense, and its most unconventional one.
