Refusing to Be a Concubine? I Married Up by Keeping My Fish Pond Stocked

As the illegitimate daughter of a fifth-rank official, I had only two choices for marriage:

Become a plaything for the powerful, or a widowed minister’s second wife.

At a poetry gathering, I “accidentally” splashed the sleeves of a marquis’s son. At a Buddhist temple, I “got lost” and stumbled into the arms of a general’s legitimate son.

Then, at my elder sister’s engagement banquet, I “carelessly” fell into the water and was rescued by the heir of a prince’s estate.

As my drenched dress clung to me, I watched his Adam’s apple bob. “If you’re willing, I’ll make you my principal wife.”
