The story takes place in a prosperous and comfortable ancient city. The city is divided between rich and poor. The west family and the Dong family are dignitaries in the city and live a luxurious life; while the protagonist is a young scholar with a worldly ambition but an ordinary background. At that time, border wars broke out frequently (the Hehuang area was turbulent), and there was a hidden crisis in the dynastic rule.
