Honestly, I'd rather see the protagonist build their own power, but stories where they assist someone are fine too. They can support Cao Cao, Liu Bei, or even Sun Quan. But don't start by trashing Liu Bei and then have the protagonist go help Cao Cao. If they're going to assist Cao Cao, just go straight to that. What's the point of bashing Liu Bei first and then switching sides?
