I, Zhu Baba, a hapless soul who just transmigrated from the hell of modern-day corporate drudgery, was crouching by the wall outside the Yingtian Prefecture yamen, staring blankly at the identity travel permit in my hands.

The permit read in black and white: "Zhu Chongba, native of Fengyang Prefecture, twenty-three years old, seven chi tall, fair-faced and clean-shaven, skilled with the abacus, currently a clerk in the household affairs office of Yingtian Prefecture."

"Zhu Chongba?" I nearly spat a mouthful of blood onto the permit. "Does the Zhu family have eighty-eight people, or are they so poor they couldn't even afford to give me a proper name?"
