"The Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties" is a long chapter-length novel with dual characteristics of heroic legend and historical romance written by Chu Renhuo, a writer in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It has a total of twenty volumes and one hundred chapters. Regarding the writing time of "Romance of Sui and Tang Dynasties", Lu Xun believed that it was written in the 14th year of Kangxi (1675). The earliest extant printed version is the Sixue Caotang version in the 34th year of Kangxi (1695).
The overall structure of the book is based on history, characters and events as the latitude, and the "marriage between two generations" of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, Zhu Gui'er, Emperor Ming of the Tang Dynasty, and Yang Yuhuan as the general framework. It tells the legendary history of more than 170 years from the time Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty launched his army to attack Chen to the death of Emperor Ming Dynasty of the Tang Dynasty. The descriptions in the novel are flexible and changeable, or the presentation is gorgeous and full of the flavor of the times; or the writing is bold and the characters are vivid, describing the extravagant palace life of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, the heroes rising up in the late Sui Dynasty, Li Shimin unified the world, Wu Zetian's wild and promiscuous Tang Dynasty, and the romantic affairs of Emperor Ming and Yang Guifei of the Tang Dynasty. The book's sympathy for the ladies of the Sixteenth Academy who were homeless after the fall of the Sui Dynasty, and the lamentation for the frustration of heroes such as Qin Qiong, are inextricably linked to the author's mentality of the survivors who were "downcast" and "embarrassed" after the fall of the Ming Dynasty.
"The Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties" is compiled and processed based on the previous official history, unofficial history, folklore and popular novels about the Sui and Tang Dynasties.
