When the blade that guards national security is turned toward your deepest fear, can you still trust your memories?
The National Security System detects an abnormal flow of intelligence linked to several mysterious deaths and defections among leading scientists. Every clue suggests that a brain-computer interface far more advanced than any publicly known technology is being used by foreign forces to infiltrate and sabotage. They can implant false memories with precision and issue irresistible orders to betray the country, turning pillars of the nation into dormant bombs or loyal puppets.
Veteran detective Gao Zhen is skilled at finding the truth in bloody crime scenes and criminal logic. Because the case involves national security, he is temporarily assigned to partner with Lin Wei, a young and incisive technical investigator from the Ministry of State Security. One relies on experience and instinct, the other on technology and deduction. Together, they sift through cold bodies and bizarre electronic debris in pursuit of an enemy they cannot see.
But as the investigation deepens, every ambush and every trap they encounter seems to have been anticipated by their opponent. Their operational plans are laid bare. A cold dread begins to spread through them, not because there might be a mole, but because they are horrified to discover inexplicable cracks and flashes of deja vu appearing in the memories they hold most dear.
That old injury they can't remember clearly, that blurry childhood vision, that sudden, inexplicable order... Are these hallucinations brought on by exhaustion, or is a Trojan horse, altered and buried deep in their minds long ago, beginning to activate?
Perhaps the pursuers have been prey all along.
