In 2008, I, Chen Mo, badge number 080121, was sent by official order to Jiangcheng's busiest station, Guangming Police Station.

The police career I imagined: chasing criminals and solving cases, finding the truth in the smallest clues.

The police career I actually had: learning to understand the human condition through domestic disputes and petty theft.

It wasn't until I personally hauled the first piece of a body out of the water, heard a kidnapped child wail after being rescued, and watched a fellow officer bleed at a drug raid that I understood the weight this uniform carries: the weight of human life.

My mentor said, “A police officer must be alert before being observant. If our hearts shine bright, society won't be left in the dark.”

This is the story of one young officer's growth, and of a group of ordinary people who built a wall of light for us with their own flesh and blood.
