The sky was dark, and rain poured down in sheets. Lin Mo rushed into his house with his schoolbag on his back as a blinding bolt of lightning nearly struck him. He muttered, “That scared me half to death.” A moment later, an even stronger flash of lightning engulfed him, and his consciousness vanished completely.
When he opened his eyes again, he was sitting at the desk in a familiar classroom. “Was that a nightmare?” He had just breathed a sigh of relief when the homeroom teacher walked in. “Everyone, let's go to the Beast-Taming Hall and contract your first pet beast!”
Lin Mo was baffled. He grabbed his best friend. “What pet beast? Isn't today the mock exam?”
His friend felt his forehead. “Did you sleep yourself stupid? Today's the Beast-Taming Day that decides your fate!”
Inside the Beast-Taming Hall, a crystal stele shimmered. When it was Lin Mo's turn, he ignored the fierce-looking cubs and, as if possessed, walked toward a corner. A pink-furred fox was elegantly licking its paws. It raised its head, and the instant its glassy eyes met his, a distinct flutter stirred deep in his soul.
“I choose it.”
