On her first day at a new school, Wen Jinmo is cornered in a downpour. At her most miserable, Zhu Yutang appears with a clear umbrella. She’s the girl who always stands in the light, with even her school uniform perfectly pressed.
“Why are you crying?” Zhu Yutang leans down as rain slides off the ribs of her umbrella. “I’ll teach you how to live beautifully.”
From then on, Wen Jinmo is pulled into a completely different world. They share earphones during evening study hall to listen to “Runaway,” sneak their first taste of beer on the rooftop, and run hand in hand through the rain. Zhu Yutang gradually shapes Wen Jinmo, teaching her how to dress and helping her break through her boundaries, until the timid transfer student becomes someone else entirely.
Then, on the eve of the college entrance exams, Wen Jinmo accidentally opens Zhu Yutang’s diary. The words on the last page are clear:
“I turned her into the person I wanted most. Now it’s time to let go.”
Was their meeting a salvation, or a carefully planned transformation? When fireworks bloom in broad daylight, the brightest light hides the deepest shadows. The two girls’ youth, balanced on the edge between lies and sincerity, is about to reach an ending from which there is no turning back.
