In the steam city "New Arkham" that is shrouded in industrial fog all year round, fate is like the tightly fitting gears on a huge clock, accurately and ruthlessly driving everyone's life. People believe in the "God of Steam and Gears" and rely on the "spiritual marrow" extracted from the depths of the earth to drive this huge and sophisticated urban machine.
However, beneath this seemingly orderly mechanical civilization, there are unspeakable horrors lurking. The so-called "spiritual marrow" is the wandering dreams of ancient beings sleeping under the earth's crust; and the extraordinary power pursued by mortals - the "sequence path" - is a crazy road to quench thirst by drinking poison. Every step up the sequence means one step closer to "out of control" and "distortion", and also closer to those twisted truths of the universe that should not be known.
Su Yelin, an orphan who lives at the bottom of the city and is responsible for maintaining the highest clock tower "Grey Tower", his fate should have been like those rusty parts, falling silent day after day. Until one day, he discovered a "living gear" made of flesh and brass that did not belong to any known machinery in the core of the clock tower.
The moment he touched the gear, a magnificent and crazy picture of fate unfolded before his eyes. He was forced to embark on the forbidden "Peeper" sequence and became the humblest voyeur in the universe.
