Synopsis

In 1970, in a remote mountain village in Northeast China, educated youth Chen Shanhe has barely arrived in the countryside when he stumbles upon a weasel seeking a divine title. The beast rests its forepaws on its knees and asks in an old man's voice, “Do I look like a human or a god?”

Born with a pure yang fate and the ability to see what ordinary people cannot, he nearly dies in the encounter. At death's door, the village's last spirit medium gives up his life to pass on his spirit altar. The Five Immortals, Fox, Yellow Weasel, White Hedgehog, Willow Snake, and Gray Rat, take up residence within him, but they all regard him coldly and refuse to acknowledge him as their master.

With no System and no golden finger, he can only use mathematical logic to wrestle with ancient shamanic arts. When a human-skin drum demands a life at midnight, he traces its origins by analyzing its sound. When zombies in the forest kneel to the moon, he uses the terrain to set physical traps. When a river demon drags people away, he dissects a fish to find a child's jade pendant and solve the mystery.

By day, he is a “feudal remnant” subjected to denunciation, with the Revolutionary Committee's guns trained on his back. By night, he is a “living immortal” whom the villagers secretly kneel to worship, with notes asking for help hidden among the ashes of graveside offerings. But the more he investigates, the more his heart sinks: the evil spirits in the mountain village, the forest's reanimated corpses, and the river's ghosts are all tied to a shocking conspiracy involving the dragon vein beyond the Great Wall!

When the inscription “The lamp bearer will turn to ash” appears on a bell, and his own shadow begins burning incense of its own accord on a snowy night, Chen Shanhe finally understands: he isn't slaying evil. He's handing one “life lamp” after another to some hidden power behind the scenes.

And among the White Mountains and Black Waters, can the last spirit medium's incense burn on through an era that has shackled belief?

Rule-Based Horror Stories, No Mindless Protagonists

I've read a few really good rule-based horror stories and got hooked. I don't want anything mindless. Any recommendations, preferably completed? It drives me crazy when I get halfway through and find the author is still writing.

Any Books That Can Keep You Reading From Beginning to End?!!!

Lately, I either read the best parts of a novel or skip from chapter to chapter. There are so many good books, I don't know which one to read, and I keep reading several at once. Any super, super, super good books that can keep me focused until I finish one? Romance or no romance, either is fine.

Any Stories You Can Read Over and Over Without Getting Bored?

I’m not really into historical settings. I want stories that are still enjoyable on a second read, or that keep me eager to find out what happens next. I lose interest in so many stories as they go on. They get boring. Any recommendations?
