In Northern Song Kaifeng, the balance between yin and yang has been overturned. Bao Zheng presides over Kaifeng Prefecture, using his executioner's blade by day to right the world's wrongs, yet at night he must endure the wailing of the dead. His three executioner's blades gleam with a frigid light, and even ghosts cannot escape them. When senior court officials begin dying one after another, their souls transform into battle puppets and attack the living. Wang Chao and Ma Han slash through the illusion with their twin blades, only to reveal revenge talismans written in blood by a eunuch from the previous dynasty.
The handwriting of an old friend lies hidden among the corpses, and an unfinished game of chess from their youth suddenly comes to mind. The leader of the ghost officials emerges from the shadows, the fingers that bind souls still stained with the blood of an old miscarriage of justice. “Bao Heizi, can your executioner's blade sever the hatred of the wronged dead?” As the blade of the underworld falls, a crack appears. It turns out the most fearsome ghost was once someone who escaped the blade’s judgment.
