In February 1916, 19-year-old Karl, a student at the German Imperial University, resolutely abandoned his pen and joined the army with his longing for war and patriotic enthusiasm, and rushed to the battlefield of Verdun. However, the cruelty of the battlefield quickly shattered his idealism - the muddy trenches, endless shelling, spreading poison gas, piles of corpses, and those comrades who gradually lost their humanity in despair.
