"You... would you be willing to be buried with me?" Bian Xuan stopped mid-stride and stood still. His dark eyes were impossible to read in the night.
After asking, Xin Yi felt she had been too forward and pressed her lips together. She shouldn't have asked. Why would he agree to be buried with her?
"Why?" Bian Xuan started walking again, but asked the question in his usual calm tone.
Xin Yi lowered her eyes and followed him. "You're quiet, alone, can't be buried, don't want to."
Bian Xuan listened quietly to the girl's soft voice. Her words could be understood in many ways, but he knew what she meant: she couldn't die alone, and didn't want to be alone. He was quiet, and he didn't dislike her.
"All right. Let's pick a date." Bian Xuan stopped, turned to face Xin Yi, and spoke gently, a faint smile appearing on his face.
Xin Yi stared blankly at the smile on the young man's face. It was so warm, so captivating, so dear to her. Suddenly she felt awful. Someone as wonderful as him shouldn't be buried with her.
Xin Yi wanted to take it back, to refuse, but when the words reached her lips, she couldn't make them come out. She was so selfish, so awful. Pressing her lips together, she walked past him and went home.
"Shall we... be buried together?"
"Don't be afraid. You're not alone. It's all over now." Xin Yi didn't answer him. Someone as wonderful as him shouldn't end his life here. He would get better, he had to!
The lights of countless homes shone brightly, like phosphorescence, glowing as they receded into the distance. When she reached out, all she could feel in her hand was a cool breeze. But a broad, strong hand clasped hers tightly, its warmth driving away the chill that had enveloped her.
A rising star was heading toward self-destruction, taking with it a flower that had been heading toward ruin amid the malice called jealousy.
