The Missing Truth: The Corpse Staircase

Deep beneath the labyrinthine underground of Chungking Mansions, what lies dormant is not a skeleton of steel and concrete, but an organ that is still writhing. A Ming is a down-and-out young man who dreams of becoming a doctor but has repeatedly failed his exams. To survive, he rents a subdivided flat on the third basement level of Chungking Mansions and finds odd work transporting linens in a hotel laundry. His life is carved into numbers precise to the minute: water dripping through the walls at 60 BPM is the heartbeat that wakes him; the elevator’s strange noises at 01:44 signal the awakening of the mycelium; and the blood-red triangles marked on the calendar behind his door are quietly connecting into a hexagon of death, trapping him inside. He soon discovers that inexplicable, eerie patches of fungus have begun appearing on the linens he transports. They grow only on fabric washed and dried at 1:44 a.m. Following the clues, he ventures deeper into the building’s forbidden depths, to the B4 level that “does not exist” on the official blueprints. It was once a painless clinic called “Benevolence.” Now it has become an upside-down operating room that defies the laws of physics, an eternal nightmare haunted by inhuman nurses. As scientific understanding crumbles before supernatural reality, A Ming discovers that terrifying changes are beginning to take place inside his own body. The triangular key in his hand can open the forbidden door to the truth, but it may also become the weapon that sets off his own sacrificial ritual. Before the next new moon, he must solve the deadly mystery entwining the clinic’s bloody past, mysterious symbols, and urban legends. Otherwise, he will no longer be the one pursuing the truth, but the next offering to be “digested” by this living building.
