Autumn, 1937. A county somewhere in North China.
Chen Ying, born into a family of hunters for generations, once lived a quiet life in a mountain village. His family's livelihood depended on an heirloom hunting rifle, but the Japanese army's iron hooves shattered their peace. One blood-red dusk, Japanese troops massacred the village. Chen Ying watched helplessly as his loved ones fell in pools of blood, escaping only because he knew the terrain so well.
Driven by hatred for the enemy and the loss of his family, Chen Ying joined the guerrilla force led by Zhao Dashan. His marksmanship shone in battle: he never missed a shot from a hundred paces, nor a moving target. From ambushing patrols to raiding arms depots, from covering civilians as they fled to attacking enemy strongholds in the county seat, Chen Ying made legend after legend with the rifle in his hands.
The Japanese sent their ace sniper, Kuroki Jiro, to deal with Chen Ying. The two master marksmen fought a deadly duel across the land of North China. Sniper battles in dense woods, chases through ruins, and a final showdown before dawn: every clash was heart-stopping.
During the eight-year war of resistance, Chen Ying grew from a simple avenger into a steadfast fighter against the Japanese. He trained newcomers, led battles, and planned surprise attacks, becoming the “Mountain Hawk” whose name struck fear into Japanese troops. When the first light of 1945 shone across the land, Chen Ying stood atop the walls of the liberated county seat, gazing at the dark, distant mountains. At last, he knew, this land had returned to its people.
This is not the legend of one man, but a portrait of the countless heroes who fought against the Japanese. With their flesh and blood, they built the backbone of a nation; with their indomitable will, they won the final victory.
