Later, he defied public opinion and sold cigarettes in Humen to fight against the British invaders, showing a strong spirit of patriotism. But in the end he was framed by Mu Zhang'a and other treacherous ministers, and was demoted to Yili. In Ili, he reclaimed wasteland to benefit the local people. Later, he was appointed to serve as governor of Shaanxi and Gansu, governor of Shaanxi and other positions. Finally, he died of illness on the way to be appointed as imperial envoy.
