The Spirit Medium Magistrate

My name is Zheng Ye. I was a top modern forensic science student, but I was electrocuted while pulling an all-nighter over an autopsy. When I opened my eyes, I had become a judicial commissioner during Emperor Zhenzong’s reign in the Song dynasty. My predecessor had been forced to take his own life after botching a case, and before his bones were even cold, his vengeful spirit was haunting the courthouse.

The court is corrupt, the powerful run rampant, and every bizarre case conceals a dark secret. I’ve just arrived, with no allies, and could easily become someone else’s scapegoat.

Then I unexpectedly acquired the art of reading the words of the dead. If I close my eyes and stand beside a corpse, I can connect with the deceased’s consciousness. They tell me the truth in their own voices, their blood and tears bearing witness, every word crystal clear.

From then on, silent cases speak, and dry bones cry out for justice. While others search for evidence, I watch the dead relive their memories. While coroners examine wounds, I ask the victims about their killer’s motives.

While everyone else is still searching for clues, I already know the murderer’s name. The prefectural court is stunned, my colleagues look on in disbelief, and corrupt officials can’t sleep for fear.

Whenever someone is murdered, a ghost whispers the truth. I will make sure that in Bianjing, no one suffers a wrongful conviction and no one is above the law.
