In 2022, after Japan's "Violent Gang Countermeasures Act" was revised, the registration system for gang members was fully implemented. The Yamaguchi-gumi split into the "direct faction" (supporting Retsu Tanaka) and the "side faction" (controlled by Hiroshi Yamamoto). The core areas (Tokyo, Yokohama) were infiltrated by the emerging gang "Gokukai", and the side faction secretly cooperated with the Southeast Asian drug trafficking group "Snake Gang" and used the channels of the Yamaguchi-gumi to smuggle arms.
