Hidden Blades in the Spy Game: The Impostor of Unit 76

Shanghai’s foreign concessions, 1939. The undercurrents run deep.

Shen Yan, a modern criminal-investigation specialist, opens his eyes to find himself a low-level archivist in the Wang puppet regime’s 76th Division, a hapless man about to be executed for “incompetence.”

To save himself, he uses his “detail recall” ability to identify a mole from traces of ink on an encrypted telegram, unexpectedly drawing the attention of Wang Manchun, head of the 76th Division.

From then on, Shen Yan hides behind a façade of mediocrity, carefully navigating the wolf-infested 76th Division:

He identifies a Japanese spy from fibers found beneath a victim’s fingernails, sparks infighting between the Japanese and their puppet regime by tampering with files, tricks the Kwantung Army into handing over its defense plans with false intelligence, and quietly diverts smuggling profits to fund the underground Communist Party.

He maneuvers between military intelligence assassins, Japan’s Special Higher Police, and the underground Party. In Wang Manchun’s eyes, he is a “capable assistant”; to the Japanese army, he is a “phantom” to be feared; and in the shadows, he is a “hidden blade” protecting his country.

When his identity is on the verge of being exposed and his comrades die heroic deaths, Shen Yan finally understands: an agent is simply a firefly that burns itself away in the darkness to light the road to dawn.

And his battlefield has never been limited to a hail of bullets. It also lies in the narrow arena where hearts and minds contend.
