“Wangshu goes before, leading the way.”

“Cherish virtue in your heart, yet know not where to turn when all hope is gone.”

That year, he came to live in Jiang Wangshu’s home.

“Brother Huaijin, have some peach blossom cakes.”

“Brother Huaijin, I’m cold.”

“Zhaozhao? She’s only my little sister.”

“Zhaozhao… wait for your brother.”

“Zhaozhao, my Zhaozhao, we were meant for each other from the start.” Jiang Huaijin’s eyes were bloodshot, tears brimming in them and soaking his lashes, making him look like a puppy that had been abandoned.

“Isn’t that right, Zhaozhao?” His voice trembled, and soft sobs came from his throat. He buried his face in the crook of Jiang Wangshu’s neck and pleaded, “Zhaozhao… please… love me… cherish me… don’t leave me. Your brother belongs to you… Huaijin belongs to you too…”

A sudden, icy touch against his cheek made him jerk his head up. The person in his arms was not his Zhaozhao at all, only half of the jade pendant his beloved had worn in life. Jiang Huaijin pressed his forehead to the pendant. A hoarse voice came from deep in his throat. “Zhaozhao… my Zhaozhao.” Every word sounded as if it were being wrung from his heart.

“Whatever it takes… save my Zhaozhao… save… my beloved…”

Miraculously, Jiang Wangshu woke up.

“Zhaozhao.” Jiang Huaijin sat with Jiang Wangshu in his arms on the swing and kissed her forehead. “My Zhaozhao.”

“Don’t leave me alone again, Zhaozhao.”

“Jiang Huaijin belongs to Jiang Wangshu. A Jin and Zhaozhao will be together forever.”

“If you leave me, I’ll go with you to the underworld.”
