Eternal Life in the North

"Everlasting Life in Dingbei" tells the story of Huo Qubing, a young man who rose to fame early. While performing a ceremony at Mount Langjuxu, he unexpectedly gains the power to share life with others and embarks on an immortal journey to protect the lands north of the desert. Abandoning warfare, he builds a city and establishes farms in Dingbei, bringing the Han and Xiongnu peoples together to live side by side. Through wisdom and tolerance, he transforms a barren frontier town, once rife with conflict, into a paradise where the Hu and Han peoples live in harmony.

In his later years, Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che, inspects the frontier and sees that Huo Qubing has not aged despite the passing years. His search reveals the secret of immortality: it is not about preserving oneself alone, but about protecting others and sharing life with them. The emperor lays down his power and settles in Dingbei. Together with Huo Qubing, he drinks the snowmelt of immortal mountains and absorbs the light of the sun and moon, practicing their breathing techniques and learning the ways of heaven and earth. They join forces to fight the evil spirits of Black Wind Valley and subdue an ancient water monster, overcoming crises through the unity of the city’s people. They also witness Dingbei grow from a small frontier town into an immortal city that draws envoys from every land.

When the Big Dipper calls them to the heavens and their immortal fate draws to a close, they become the spiritual energy of Dingbei, forever protecting the land they nurtured with shared life and the warmth of everyday human life. Told in a lighthearted, humorous style, the story blends fantastical cultivation with ordinary life, and in its passion and tenderness weaves an enduring legend of immortality, protection, and the blending of civilizations.
