In the late 1930s, when the war was raging, Han Yong, a young man from Hebei Province, said goodbye to his hometown, parents, wife and children to avoid the scourge of war and famine, and went to Tianjin to make a living alone. His wife Wang Qingping has a strong personality and stays in the countryside to support the family. Han Yong went through hardships in Tianjin and finally gained a foothold in the factory, taking his wife with him to share the joys and sorrows. As time went by, they picked up their elderly parents, but failed to save their seriously ill father's life. After that, six children were born one after another. In this crowded bungalow, the Han family began to struggle and watch in the tide of the times. Six children, six lives: the rebellious eldest sister Xiulan, the smart and tenacious second sister Xiuhua, the stubborn and practical Jianguo, the cheerful and enterprising Hongwei, the stubborn and frustrated Jianjun, and the docile and honest fourth child Jianping. They experienced liberation, going to the countryside, the Cultural Revolution, reform and opening up, and their fates fluctuated accordingly. Xiuhua and Hongwei became leaders of their respective units through hard work, but Jianjun became self-employed after being sent to a labor camp due to a fight. When parents were alive, home was the bond that united family ties; after the two elders passed away one after another, the former brotherhood fell apart in the face of the real interests of real estate and inheritance. Through the Han family's joys and sorrows spanning half a century, the novel profoundly depicts the survival epic of ordinary Chinese families. There is both deep affection for each other and tearing apart in the face of interests. In the end, in the echo of the times, we ask where the roots are and how family ties can be sustained. This is a profound elegy about struggle, sacrifice, choice and reconciliation.
