In 1925 in Peiping, female student Xu Jing participated in the New Culture Movement and met the warlord Marshal Gu Tingchen who was ordered to suppress it. Gu Tingchen was moved by Xu Jing's ideals and secretly protected the students. When a warlord war broke out, Xu Jing participated in the national salvation movement. Gu Tingchen chose between family interests and patriotism, and finally gave up military power and devoted himself to education with Xu Jing to protect the people of Peiping.
