The novel is based on the history of the Anti-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945. It tells the story of Lin Yuanzhou, a college student in Peking, who grew up from an avenger who lost his family to the "Lone Shadow", an underground intelligence agent of the Chinese Communist Party. It completely presents key plots such as his lurking in the Nanjing puppet government, participating in the Jinling Night Fire Operation, investigating bacteriological warfare in Unit 731, and finally becoming anonymous after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.
