Turning Beauty into Capital

Through two interwoven storylines, this novel portrays the predicament of women caught in power structures. In ancient times, salt merchants seeking powerful patrons sent intelligent women into the mansions of officials. In the modern workplace, some people in positions of power exploit their networks, turning women’s feelings and dignity into bargaining chips.

By contrasting the constraints of traditional ethics with modern workplace discipline, ancient commercial exchanges of interest with the modern allocation of resources, and secluded mansions with private social venues, the story shows how women in different eras are placed at a disadvantage in struggles for power. When they try to use the clues they hold to gain autonomy, they face one setback after another. Against an immense system, an individual’s resistance seems especially weak.

With delicate prose, the novel explores how power structures shape individual destinies and how similar predicaments repeat across different eras, prompting readers to reflect deeply on human nature and the rules of society.
