During the Republic of China era, in Taocun, Dingxi Fang, Gansu, the three Chen brothers, Shuigen, Shuisheng, and Shuiqing, lose their father when they are young. Their mother struggles to raise her three unfortunate children, and they live in lonely hardship. Their lives, which should have been poor but peaceful, are shattered when bandits come down from the mountains to raid the village. The brothers are scattered across the land and set out on very different paths. As time passes, fate seems to toy with them, bringing them together again…
There are no absolute heroes in this story, only ordinary people struggling to survive in the whirlpool of fate.
