On the Qianyuan Continent, where source energy runs rampant, sixteen-year-old Du Yu lives at the very bottom of society in a slum west of the Eastern Realm's royal city. By day, he roams the Western Wasteland picking Condensing Energy Grass and Companion Flowers, trading them on the black market for black steamed buns and a fragmentary cultivation manual, the Art of Drawing in Qi. At night, he curls up in a drafty earthen hut, clumsily cultivating through the stinging impurities in the source energy. He does it all to protect the wooden plaque bearing the character Ning, left to him by his mother before she died, and to fulfill her dying wish: "See the world as it truly is."
