In the novel, humanity has achieved “memory digitization,” allowing consciousness and memories to be stored in the “Star Core Database.” However, some people cannot upload their memories because of “memory rejection syndrome.” Their memories vanish when their bodies die, giving rise to the profession of “memory ferrymen.” And so the story begins.
