When her child is kidnapped, she worries first about her broken new fingernail guards. To win the male lead back, she cooks spicy soup and dumps in a whole bag of chilies, then drops her hairpin into it!
The male lead, Pei Shaojun, goes from doting on her to breaking down. The story ends in a ruined temple, where Pei Shaojun takes the child away.
And Ruyi? Clutching a bent old fingernail guard, she wanders the streets and dies of cold and hunger in a blizzard, still muttering, “Where are my young love and my hairpin?”
