In Peiping in 1930, Shen Yurong, a famous opera troupe actor, became famous in Peiping for his superb Peking opera skills. Gu Yanzhi, a young scholar, met Shen Yurong because of his research on Peking Opera culture. Gu Yanzhi is gentle and elegant, and admires Shen Yurong's skills and tenacity; Shen Yurong is also attracted by Gu Yanzhi's knowledge and patriotism. However, the Japanese army gradually approached Beiping, and the situation in Beiping was turbulent. The Japanese army wanted to use Shen Yurong's fame to promote pro-Japanese ideas, but Shen Yurong firmly refused. Gu Yanzhi organized patriotic students to carry out anti-Japanese activities and was hunted down by the Japanese army. Shen Yurong used his identity as a troupe to help Gu Yanzhi avoid being hunted many times. Before the fall of Peking, the two worked together to protect patriots and cultural classics, and wrote a past story in Peking in which patriotism and love were intertwined in troubled times.
