The story takes place in Neo-Arcadia, a quintessential cyberpunk metropolis. The protagonist, K, is a “memory diver” who infiltrates the brains of the dead using technology and extracts residual memories for profit. On one job, he accepts an anonymous commission from the megacorporation Source One Group to enter the brain of its deceased senior researcher, Dr. Aris Thorne, and steal a research data model. But K encounters something unexpected.
He finds no conventional data. Instead, amid the ruins of Thorne’s consciousness, he discovers a colossal, lifeless “black sun” that devours all memories. As he attempts to download this bizarre psychic imprint, the black sun retaliates, forcibly implanting an unknown, highly contaminating payload deep within K’s consciousness. The incident becomes known as “memetic contamination.”
The botched operation makes K Source One Group’s number-one target, and the corporation sends the legendary “cleaner” Syllas to hunt him down. During his escape, K discovers that the “black sun” implanted in his brain is not simply a virus, but an entity that coexists with him. By calculating probability storms, it provides K with astonishing routes to survival and helps him evade lethal pursuers.
Seeking answers and a way to survive, K follows the final instructions of his former middleman, the “Courier,” and heads to the city’s lowest level, the “Logic Graveyard,” an abandoned AI data center, to find the legendary “consciousness tuner,” Old Ji.
