Su Xiaomei: The Wise Beauty of Meishan

In the long years of Meishan in the Northern Song dynasty, the story of a legendary woman was passed from mouth to mouth. She was Su Xiaomei. Though she is hard to find in official histories, her talent and wisdom shine like brilliant stars in legends and literary works.

Born into the scholarly Su family, Su Xiaomei grew up immersed in a rich literary atmosphere. Exceptionally clever, she excelled at music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, and could compose poetry and couplets with ease. Legend has it that she often discussed learning with her father and brothers, Su Shi and Su Zhe. Whenever her brothers tested or teased her, she always came up with a quick-witted reply. When Su Shi joked, "You haven't even taken five steps out of the courtyard, yet your forehead has already reached the hall," she immediately retorted, "A tear of longing I shed last year still hasn't reached the side of your face." Everyone burst out laughing, a testament to her quick wit.

When it came time for her to marry, Su Xiaomei chose her husband for his talent, giving rise to the famous tale of the "three challenges for the bridegroom." Qin Shaoyou came seeking her hand, and the two exchanged poems. He cleverly solved all three of Su Xiaomei's challenges, and the pair were finally wed. After their marriage, they lived in harmony, exchanging poems and songs, becoming a romantic legend in literary circles.

In this biography, Su Xiaomei is no longer merely the distant, gifted woman of legend, but a vivid and spirited woman of flesh and blood. With delicate prose, the book depicts the details of her daily life and her emotional world, showing how she shone with a unique brilliance and wrote her own legendary life through talent and wisdom, despite the constraints of feudal etiquette.
