The Yin-Walker of Black Mountain: My Spirit Altar Serves No Immortals

My name is Chen Shan. I was born in Shaoguotun, at the foot of Black Mountain.

Other families worship the Fox, Weasel, White Snake, Willow, and Rat immortals to protect their homes and build merit.

But my family’s ancestral altar accepts only ghosts who died violently and spirits who met unjust ends. We worship resentful souls from all corners of the world and live off the wages of the dead.

My great-grandfather said this was a “Yin-walking altar.” It could dispel ghosts’ grievances and settle cases from the underworld, but it could also shorten your life and bring disaster.

Ten years ago, I was forced to inherit this eerie altar. Since then, I have walked the boundary between yin and yang.

A weasel seeking a title, a bound earth spirit beneath a reservoir, a mass grave in the old forest, a ghost bride weeping at midnight…

Everything I’ve experienced is far more sinister and bizarre than any legend.

Now I’ll slowly tell you about the unbelievable things I saw, heard, and encountered during those ten years of walking the yin path…
