The story takes place in a mysterious mountain village in western Hunan. Pearl, a Miao girl, knows the art of poison magic, while Luo Yuan'er has come here with her Taoist master and specializes in catching ghosts. A series of bizarre incidents suddenly strikes the village: bodies appear from nowhere, a woman in red is spotted at the hanging coffins atop the mountain, strange cries ring out at night, and ghost fires flare up without warning. The villagers are gripped by fear.
A mysterious villainous organization is pulling the strings from the shadows, hoping to seize the region's mysterious powers. They obstruct the protagonists' search for the truth and sabotage their investigations. If the protagonists fail, the village will be plunged into endless darkness and the villagers' lives will be in danger. Pearl and Luo Yuan'er each have weaknesses in their abilities, putting them at a disadvantage against powerful ghosts and those who control poison magic. Some villagers are also deceived by the villains and turn against them, forcing the protagonists to choose sides and earn the villagers' trust.
A suitor falls in love with Pearl, and his involvement leads Luo Yuan'er to misunderstand her. The villains also spread rumors that turn the villagers against the protagonists. If the village's strange incidents are not resolved in time, an ancient evil force will awaken on the night of the full moon. In the perilous, rugged mountains of western Hunan, the protagonists face the threat of death at every turn. But with their resilience and wit, and the help of their allies, they overcome one crisis after another and uncover the stories behind the ghosts. In the end, they discover Luo Yuan'er's true origins, then travel the martial world together, catching ghosts for money and enjoying a carefree life.
