Cao Zhi was a famous literary figure of the Cao Wei state during the Three Kingdoms period and a leading representative of Jian'an literature. Courtesy name Zijiang, he was the third son of Emperor Wu of Wei, Cao Cao, and the younger brother of Cao Pi. Inspired by the romantic legend of Cao Zhi and the Goddess of the Luo River, this book spins a fantastical tale of saving the world that spans the mortal and immortal realms and bridges heaven and earth. Cao Zhi meets the Goddess of the Luo River, and after they fall in love, the two spend three years honing their skills in Yancheng and selflessly rescuing the people and providing disaster relief. Their deeds move the Heavenly Emperor, who invites them both to ascend to the celestial court.
There, Cao Zhi and the Goddess of the Luo River establish the "Luo River Conservatory of Music." Determined to connect mortals and immortals and share the cultures of both realms, Cao Zhi becomes a savior who bears the "responsibility of an immortal" in a "mortal body." The Goddess of the Luo River lends him her divine power, standing with him to protect the academy and their aspiration that transcends the mortal world and the heavens. Conservative celestial officials question whether "a mortal deserves to run an immortal academy." Xuan Yin, the fairy who oversees the music workshop, trips them up out of jealousy; Cao Pi, who rules the Purple Cloud Palace, brings old grudges from the mortal realm; and a fairy's resentment after her love is rejected makes the conspiracy ever more tangled.
In their hour of need, the skilled physician Immortal Elder Baicao saves the dying and heals the wounded; the ancient spirit-flower butterfly uses its invisibility to investigate the truth; the Crown Prince of Heaven sends celestial soldiers to protect the academy; and the Princess of Heaven draws on her connections to resolve the crisis. The Great Sage Equaling Heaven, Chang'e, and Lord Laozi are among the immortals who rush to help. Cao Zhi and the Goddess of the Luo River also repeatedly descend to the mortal world to aid the people during floods and plagues, embodying the true meaning of "saving the world" through boundless compassion. They sail far across the seas to relieve human suffering. Seeing Cao Zhi's talent and great compassion, the Heavenly Emperor appoints him head of the Celestial-Mortal Integration Office, responsible for coordinating affairs between the mortal and immortal realms. Cao Zhi and the Goddess of the Luo River earn respect across all realms and resolve their longstanding feud with Cao Pi, making peace as brothers once more.
This passionate love between a mortal and a goddess, born beside the Luo River, becomes an everlasting legend cherished by heaven and earth, passed down through generations among the stars.
