To support my dad’s retirement hobby, I bought him a top-of-the-line fishing rod worth 200,000 yuan.
When my husband found out, he hadn’t even said a word before my mother-in-law started making snide remarks beside him.
“Well, aren’t you a devoted daughter? Your dad’s just going to sit by the river, and you spend 200,000 yuan on a fishing rod for him. What about me? I slave away for you all at home every day, washing clothes, cooking, and looking after the kids. When I asked you to get me a massage chair, you said you’d have to think about it. What, does my back not count?”
“And besides, spending that much on a lousy fishing rod? Does he think he’s going to catch the Dragon King? Maybe someone swindled him. He’s old enough to know better. I bet he’s just using that fishing rod as an excuse to fool around by the river with those shady widows!”
I usually couldn’t be bothered to argue with her, but this time I slammed the fruit knife in my hand onto the table.
“Whether my dad goes fishing or who he goes with is none of your business!”
“If you can’t keep that mouth of yours in check, I don’t mind sewing it shut!”
