Shen Zhiyi, a young lady who has returned from studying in France; Xu Yanshen, a regiment commander in the Shanghai Garrison Command; and Du Qingyan, editor-in-chief of the Shanghai Review.
Amid the emotional entanglements between the three and Chen Jinglan's constant provocations and sabotage,
they break free from the constraints of their era,
and ultimately form a three-person relationship with “no official recognition in public, but mutual understanding in private.”
The four great families resist Japanese forces in different ways,
protecting Shanghai and one another in their own ways.
The romance develops slowly at first, taking a back seat to all the twists and turns of the espionage games. The pace is a little fast, with one reversal after another.
