Shakespeare's Best: Tit for Tit

This problematic comedy explores the complex relationship between justice, tolerance and power. The Duke of Vienna temporarily left, leaving power to the strict governance of Angelou. Angelou enforced the law strictly and wanted to execute Claudio for committing adultery. Claudio's sister Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for mercy, but Angelo threatens her with chastity in exchange for it. In the end, the Duke turned into a monk and manipulated secretly, exposing Angelou's hypocrisy through the "bed trick". The script leaves a deep thought in the seemingly comic ending: Does real justice lie in the letter of the law or in moral kindness? Does power inevitably breed corruption?
