It tells the story of Sun Wukong's abandonment of the Buddha's throne after the Buddhist scriptures, which triggered another conquest by Heaven. Only the remnant of Sun Wukong's soul was left. With the help of the protagonist Li Wuming, he survived among the gods and Buddhas and sought the truth about his journey to the West.
