In 2025, overworked office drone Lü Zhongxia falls down a flight of stairs while trying to get a rare edition of the Classic of Mountains and Seas from the library. When she opens her eyes, she has become the daughter of a private-school teacher in Haicheng, 1938. The original owner fell into a well and remained unconscious, and now Lü Zhongxia must cope with life in the Republican era while enduring the label of having undergone a “complete change in personality” and dealing with mythical beasts from the Classic of Mountains and Seas running amok. Lü Ruibin, newly returned from studying abroad, is both her childhood betrothed and the person who has rescued her from danger time and again. From trading barbs and testing each other to falling in love, they gather a group of companions and form an investigation team, using the White Mountain-and-Seas Token to fight their enemies’ Black Mountain-and-Seas Token. But just as they overcome one crisis after another, Lü Zhongxia takes a fatal blow meant for someone else. After bidding farewell to her beloved in the Republican era, she suddenly wakes back in the modern day, only to find a faded photograph of a Republican-era street tucked inside her copy of the Classic of Mountains and Seas...
