The twenty-fifth year of the Republic of China, Suzhou. Lin Weiyun, a daughter from a scholarly family, is proficient in the lost ancient paper-making skills; Gu Yanshen, a young ancient book restorer who returned from studying in Japan, went south to save the literature from the war. The two met while trying to recover the legendary "Bone-Engraved Note" from ancient times, and their love grew secretly during the collision of their research day and night.
"Bone-engraved Notes" are said to be made with painstaking efforts and thoughts. The writing is permanent and invulnerable to water and fire, symbolizing "unforgettable memories". Lin Weiyun stayed in Suzhou, adhering to their agreement and skills amidst endless waiting and worry. She put tears into paper and created the original "tear-marked paper", which delivered "letters of peace" to countless separated families and became a glimmer of light in the war. However, long-term worry and an accident made her blind, and the world fell into eternal darkness.
In 1945, the Anti-Japanese War was won. Gu Yanshen returned from a near-death experience with half a scrap of paper, only to find that his lover could no longer see his face. The ecstasy of reunion intertwined with the bone-crushing pain. They discovered that the real secret of the "Bone-Engraved Note" was far beyond their imagination - once it is written, it can never be changed, just like the ultimate contract witnessed by heaven and earth.
